The Sonic Arts Ensemble created an otherworldly immersive experience bringing collaborating artists and audiences into the multiverse of our pandemic lives. Directed by Marc Ainger (Music/ACCAD) and Fede Cámara Halac (GAHDT PostDoc), the Sonic Arts Ensemble explores the extension of traditional instruments and modes of performance into new, imaginative realms of action and interaction.
For this special concert, the Ensemble met in virtual space to connect from their homes in Argentina and the U.S. (Ohio, Indiana, New York, Florida). Watch the Full Performance for at The Wexner Center for the Arts online.
Livable Futures co-founder Norah Zuniga Shaw (Dance/ACCAD) performed with Motion Lab director Oded Huberman (Dance/ACCAD) and several musicians and the Wexner Center for the Arts created a high quality audio and video mix. Zuniga Shaw hopes this technology can help strengthen human bonds. Week by week during the spring and summer, she saw the way live collaboration enhanced the well-being of everyone involved. Humans love making sound together – laughter, applause, singing and music – and that opportunity has really dropped off during the pandemic, she said. She continues, “Because society at large is now realizing the stakes in our digital lives, there’s a radically enhanced and expanded audience for the intellectual and creative work of this kind of performance. This is an example of a way that we can and should be pushing on our technologies to be more humane and to advance our lives and well-being, not just corporate profits.”
Elizabeth A. Baker, new renaissance artist and sonic innovator, joined the ensemble for this special performance at the Wexner Center for the Arts.
The project has attracted a lot of interest on campus, locally, nationally and internationally from artists and audiences seeking new ways to connect in times of social distance.
