September is National Preparedness Month and the theme this year is #BePreparedNotScared. Join the Livable Futures book group to discuss and share strategies for to #beReady but not afraid, to prepare but stay in loving connection rather than forms of survivalism that divide and separate us.
What do we train ourselves and our children for as extreme events increase and climate change? How can we bring love and community and joy to the process of preparing for and responding to crisis? We will read FEMA resources and others on how to #bePreparedNotScared, revisit key passages on community action and creative strategies from Emergent Strategy by adrienne maree brown and share ideas. Based on brown’s affection for the writings of Nebula and Hugo award winning science fiction writer, Octavia Butler, Emergent embraces the idea of change and adaptation as we face planetary and personal struggles. Using her expansive backgrounds, brown asks the reader to not steel themselves against change, but to embrace it and flow with it to help transform it to become that kind of change that is helpful and useful to us. We take up this charge together in this reading room!
We will also draw names for 5 places in a Wilderness First Responder training in December and open time to discuss projects ideas for the coming year. Join us!
Bagels and coffee will be provided.
